Among the many ways we support the community is by hosting Breakfasts with History.  In this lecture series, knowledgeable speakers provide insight into the varied and interesting history of life in the Santa Cruz River Valley.

In the spring, the society celebrates with an Annual Picnic at a historic site. Also, periodically we sponsor field trips to archaeological and historical sites.

Tubac History on Thursday Afternoon With Dan Judkins

September 28, 2023 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Tubac History on Thursday Afternoon With Dan Judkins

September 28, 2023 at 3:30pm – this will be our first monthly Thursday afternoon history discussion

· At Tubac Historical Society’s “Casita,” 6 Burruel, Tubac

· Due to limited space (20) in the casita for a small group like this, you will need to reserve a spot for this event ahead of time. Go to djudkins1950@gmail.com to sign up. Get your spot before they are gone. You do not have to be a THS member to attend, although we know that you will want to join THS if you are interested in local history.

· THS’s new Tubac History discussion group will be small, informal, and participatory. The group will gather for a relaxed time discussing a Tubac-relevant history topic. This will not be the usual “lecture,” but rather a series of questions on a specified topic, some mini “presentations” by several in the group, examination of documents and maps and relevant reference sources, and group discussion. You don’t have to prepare ahead of time, nor present anything – just relax and learn. Questions will be asked by everyone, and anyone with thoughts, ideas, or history tidbits will have time to share.

· Bring a snack or hors d’ oeuvre, and something to drink. We will share.

· Sept. 28 topic: “Very Early Tubac – 1695-1767”

  • Do we know anything about the Indians living at Tubac?
  • Did Kino have a visita at Tubac?
  • Some Kino maps list “S. Martín,” and “Gabic / Gabite” as locations north on the Santa Cruz River from “S. Cayetano.” Could one of these locations been at Tubac?
  • First recorded visit and first baptism at Tubac
  • Capt. Joseph Díaz del Carpio visit to Tubac in early March 1752
  • Tubac Presidio established in 1752
  • Joseph de Urrutia and the Marquis de Rubí visit to Tubac, December 1766-January 1767
  • The Urrutia map of 1766-1767: the river, the acéquia, the planted fields, Casa de Capitán, Cuerpo de Guardia, and Cementeria

· The topic for October will be “Tubac in the mid 1770’s”

· Planned future dates for the Thursday Afternoon history discussion group are:

October 26, November 30, and December 28 in 2023, and January 25, February 29, March 28, April 25, and May 30 in 2024. There will be no meetings in June, July, nor August in 2024.
