SUMMARY:Henry Ossian Flipper
DESCRIPTION:The Tubac Historical Society is celebrating Black History Month\, February 1 to March 1\, 2023\, by honoring Henry Ossian Flipper who was born into slavery in 1856\, was the first black graduate from West Point Military Academy in 1877\, and by 1881 was falsely accused of embezzling government funds and stripped of his military status. \nUndeterred by this\, he reinvented himself and went on to forge a career as an engineer\, Spanish translator\, Justice Department special agent\, inventor\, author\, historian and newspaper editor. \nHe spent much of the 1880s and 1890s in Nogales\, Arizona\, where he examined and adjudicated thousands of early land grants. He became a highly respected citizen of Nogales. \nIn spite of facing continual racism and unfair accusations throughout his life\, he embodied a perfect example of 2023’s Black History Month theme of “Black Resistance.” \nCome see our exhibit about Henry O. Flipper at our Visitor Center\, 6 Burruel Street.

SUMMARY:Tubac Historic on Thursday Afternoon\, November 2023
DESCRIPTION:In November\, the “Tubac History on a Thursday Afternoon” discussion group will meet on November 30 at 3:30pm\, the week after Thanksgiving. This one time only\, instead of a sit-down discussion in the Casita\, we will\, instead\, meet at the Casita to briefly review the details of the 1767 Urrutia map of Tubac\, then go on a walking tour which will include some of the key places on the Urrutia map including the presidio soldiers’ houses and small plaza (which is inside the fenced Archaeological Conservancy area)\, a couple of parts of the old Spanish road\, and the acequia — all shown on that map. In addition\, we may stop at several of the places on the THS (self-guided) walking tour.\nSince we will be out and about this one month only\, we will skip having everyone bring drinks and snacks. Instead\, bring good walking shoes\, a bottle of water\, and dress for the weather. Attendance will be limited\, so pre-registration is required. Do that by emailing djudkins1950@gmail.com and sending your name(s)\, email address\, and phone number.\nFree.  RSVP by emailing Dan Judkins.

SUMMARY:Tubac History on Thursday Afternoon with Dan Judkins\, March 28\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:“Tubac History on a Thursday Afternoon”\nMarch 28\, 2024 – “Tubac walk-about with the 1776 Urrutia map in hand\,” – a slow walk of about 1-2 miles\, from the THS Casita\, through the Presidio\, to the Morris Park\, and to the south edge of the open field at the Valle Verde Ranch bed-and-breakfast\, and back. We will see parts of the old Spanish Road and several segments of the acequia\, shown on the 1767 and still visible today.\nThis is not your typical history “lecture.” It is a great opportunity to enjoy the relaxed informality of a small-group discussion to bring up history questions\, thoughts.\nThe meetings begin at 3:30 pm in the “Yellow Casita\,” next door to The Historical Society’s location at 6 Burruel St.\nPlease bring a drink for yourself and a small snack or appetizer to share. We encourage you to bring a Tubac-area history question\, comment\, or thought.\nThe discussion session starts with those who wish to ask a history question or comment. The atmosphere is very relaxed and informal.
