SUMMARY:Seal the 2020 Tubac Time Capsule!
DESCRIPTION:AN INVITATION FROM THE TUBAC HISTORICAL SOCIETY!\nThe Tubac Historical Society invites you to join us at a ceremony to seal the 2020 Tubac Time Capsule! This cache of items is a way to communicate with future generations\, giving them insight and understanding into how Tubac viewed itself at this particular time in our history.\nThe THS asked local community organizations to provide us with items that they felt were representative of their organization in the year 2020. After a year of gathering the items\, and researching the correct way to preserve them\, we are ready to seal our capsule! The capsule will be sealed for twenty-five years\, and will be opened in February of 2047.\nWe are grateful to the Friends of the Tubac Presidio who have agreed to be the “keepers” of the Tubac Time Capsule. Otero Hall is the perfect venue as it represents a piece of our historic past\, and now our historic future!\nDate: February 22\, 2022\nTime: 2:00 P.M.\nPlace: Tubac Presidio State Park\, Otero Hall\nBe a witness to this important event and join us as we send a message to future generation about who we were\, and how we saw ourselves in the very eventful year of 2020.\nRefreshments will be served after the ceremony. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Exhibit: "If you believe in spirit it is here:" Tubac's Early Art Colonists
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the next collaborative exhibit between the Tubac Historical Society and The Tubac Center of the Arts\, featuring the early artists who lived and worked in Tubac between 1948 and 1989.  The exhibit has been compiled by The Tubac Historical Society and will be displayed in the Library and Studio Gallery at the Tubac Center of the Arts from September 30th to November 14th. \nThe artwork for the exhibit was loaned to us by our fellow Tubaquenos following an appeal sent in mid-May to our membership.  We’ve included a rich diversity of mediums – paintings\, sculpture\, jewelry\, books\, fountains\, pottery – nearly 60 items created by more than 20 artists and only half of what was offered.  Your enthusiastic responses helped bring to life the camaraderie of this early group of settlers who started Tubac on the road to “Where Art and History Meet.” \nParallel to the exhibit at the Tubac Center of the Arts\, The Tubac Historical Society will be offering for sale several paintings by former Tubac artist\, Earl Dravis\, at our Customs House Visitor Center at 6 Burruel Street\, across from the Presidio.  And our gift shop also features cards\, posters\, maps\, and books by local artists. \nPlease join us at The Tubac Center of the Arts on Friday\, September 30th from 5 pm – 7pm for the opening reception or visit The Tubac Historical Society at 6 Burruel Street Wednesdays to Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. \nThe hours of operation for the Tubac Center of the Arts are:September – May:\nMonday – Saturday 10:00 am – 4:30 pm\nSunday 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm  \nArt work and quote by Trudi Fletcher. \n

SUMMARY:Henry Ossian Flipper
DESCRIPTION:The Tubac Historical Society is celebrating Black History Month\, February 1 to March 1\, 2023\, by honoring Henry Ossian Flipper who was born into slavery in 1856\, was the first black graduate from West Point Military Academy in 1877\, and by 1881 was falsely accused of embezzling government funds and stripped of his military status. \nUndeterred by this\, he reinvented himself and went on to forge a career as an engineer\, Spanish translator\, Justice Department special agent\, inventor\, author\, historian and newspaper editor. \nHe spent much of the 1880s and 1890s in Nogales\, Arizona\, where he examined and adjudicated thousands of early land grants. He became a highly respected citizen of Nogales. \nIn spite of facing continual racism and unfair accusations throughout his life\, he embodied a perfect example of 2023’s Black History Month theme of “Black Resistance.” \nCome see our exhibit about Henry O. Flipper at our Visitor Center\, 6 Burruel Street.

We welcome your contributions in memory of deceased family and friends. Last year (pictured) this was a wonderful remembrance of deceased family and friends.\nPlease research the meaning of these ofrendas online. There are many descriptions of the meaning of Day of the Dead with explanations of the symbolism of items too long to include in this letter.\n\nThank you\,\nBoard of Directors\nTubac Historical Society

SUMMARY:Tubac Historic on Thursday Afternoon\, November 2023
DESCRIPTION:In November\, the “Tubac History on a Thursday Afternoon” discussion group will meet on November 30 at 3:30pm\, the week after Thanksgiving. This one time only\, instead of a sit-down discussion in the Casita\, we will\, instead\, meet at the Casita to briefly review the details of the 1767 Urrutia map of Tubac\, then go on a walking tour which will include some of the key places on the Urrutia map including the presidio soldiers’ houses and small plaza (which is inside the fenced Archaeological Conservancy area)\, a couple of parts of the old Spanish road\, and the acequia — all shown on that map. In addition\, we may stop at several of the places on the THS (self-guided) walking tour.\nSince we will be out and about this one month only\, we will skip having everyone bring drinks and snacks. Instead\, bring good walking shoes\, a bottle of water\, and dress for the weather. Attendance will be limited\, so pre-registration is required. Do that by emailing djudkins1950@gmail.com and sending your name(s)\, email address\, and phone number.\nFree.  RSVP by emailing Dan Judkins.
