SUMMARY:Día de los Muertos Altar-Ofrenda Tour
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nDear Members\,\n\nOnce again\, we are planning to assemble a Day of the Dead Altar/Ofrenda in front of THS on Burruel Street. We welcome your contributions in memory of deceased family and friends. We will also have an alter for your beloved animal family members.\nPlease drop off any articles you wish included on our altars on or before October 29th as we will be assembling them on the 30th. When you drop off items\, please write your name\, contact information\, and a description of the items on the list at the front desk .The altar will be outside on the front porch day and night therefore please do not leave valuable or irreplaceable items. It will be dismantled on November 6th. You will be able to retrieve your items on that day or our next open day.\nWe hope you will participate once again this year. Last year (pictured) this was a wonderful remembrance of deceased family and friends.\nPlease research the meaning of these ofrendas online. There are many descriptions of the meaning of Day of the Dead with explanations of the symbolism of items too long to include in this letter.\n\nThank you\,\nBoard of Directors\nTubac Historical Society

SUMMARY:Henry Ossian Flipper
DESCRIPTION:The Tubac Historical Society is celebrating Black History Month\, February 1 to March 1\, 2023\, by honoring Henry Ossian Flipper who was born into slavery in 1856\, was the first black graduate from West Point Military Academy in 1877\, and by 1881 was falsely accused of embezzling government funds and stripped of his military status. \nUndeterred by this\, he reinvented himself and went on to forge a career as an engineer\, Spanish translator\, Justice Department special agent\, inventor\, author\, historian and newspaper editor. \nHe spent much of the 1880s and 1890s in Nogales\, Arizona\, where he examined and adjudicated thousands of early land grants. He became a highly respected citizen of Nogales. \nIn spite of facing continual racism and unfair accusations throughout his life\, he embodied a perfect example of 2023’s Black History Month theme of “Black Resistance.” \nCome see our exhibit about Henry O. Flipper at our Visitor Center\, 6 Burruel Street.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: "If you believe in spirit it is here:" Tubac's Early Art Colonists
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at The Tubac Center of the Arts on Friday\, September 30th from 5 pm – 7pm for the opening reception of “If you believe in spirit it is here:  Tubac’s Early Art Colonists.” \nWe are pleased to announce the next collaborative exhibit between the Tubac Historical Society and The Tubac Center of the Arts\, featuring the early artists who lived and worked in Tubac between 1948 and 1989.  The exhibit has been compiled by The Tubac Historical Society and will be displayed in the Library and Studio Gallery at the Tubac Center of the Arts from September 30th to November 14th. \nThe artwork for the exhibit was loaned to us by our fellow Tubaquenos following an appeal sent in mid-May to our membership.  We’ve included a rich diversity of mediums – paintings\, sculpture\, jewelry\, books\, fountains\, pottery – nearly 60 items created by more than 20 artists and only half of what was offered.  Your enthusiastic responses helped bring to life the camaraderie of this early group of settlers who started Tubac on the road to “Where Art and History Meet.” \nParallel to the exhibit at the Tubac Center of the Arts\, The Tubac Historical Society will be offering for sale several paintings by former Tubac artist\, Earl Dravis\, at our Customs House Visitor Center at 6 Burruel Street\, across from the Presidio.  And our gift shop also features cards\, posters\, maps\, and books by local artists. \nIf you can’t make the reception\, visit us at The Tubac Historical Society at 6 Burruel Street Wednesdays to Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. \nThe hours of operation for the Tubac Center of the Arts are:September – May:\nMonday – Saturday 10:00 am – 4:30 pm\nSunday 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm \nArt work and quote by Trudi Fletcher.
